I met Hans and Jolene on Nicollet Ave in Downtown Minneapolis, near 10th street. They were a very friendly looking married couple, and they each had an inviting and warm smile about them. As I walked up to them, I hadn’t initially noticed that they were handing out some Christian literature. I discovered that Hans and Jolene are from the Edina Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
In the past I’ve heard about people literally running away from Jehovah’s witnesses or slamming their front door on them. Surprisingly I’ve never really talked with a Jehovah’s witness before and as an open-minded Christian I wanted to know more. Hans & Jolene were happy to participate in my project. When I asked them about what a Jehovah’s witness is they went on to explain that they are actually Christians also but do not consider themselves Protestants or Catholics like most Christians. I learned that the two main differences are that they believe there is one God, and not in the Trinity like Catholics and Protestants believe. They also refer to God as Jehovah, which they claim is his actual name. As a Protestant Christian and hearing all of this I am not sure I totally get it, but they pointed to scripture readings which I will have to at least check out on my own and to form my own opinion and thoughts on their religious claim. To me the key to understanding and gaining wisdom is to listen, read, and talk with friends and family. Well, that is my mantra at least. It was nice meeting Hans & Jolene and for them taking some time in talking with me. I wish them both well in their spiritual journey.
